CONCORD
CONCORD stands for Consolidated Cooperation and Relations Command. It was founded
over 100 years ago, and is part police, part mediator. Think the UN, in space, but more effective. And they are very effective - Peace has held for the most of the time.
“CONCORD is branched into numerous divisions, each of which handles a certain aspect of the empire relationship. Of these divisions the CAD (Commerce Assessment Department), which oversees inter-stellar trade agreements and regulations; and DED (Directive Enforcement Department), which oversees policing in space, are by far the largest and most influential. Most space farers will only ever deal with these two departments on any regular basis and to many those two, and maybe mainly DED are the actual face of CONCORD.” (from Eve-Online)
In practical terms CONCORD serves to guard and deal with certain influences and areas that go on - they serve almost as sentries at gates in the systems they patrol, and have, in the past, shot people out of the sky for being flagged as a pirate or for other crimes. Most interesting however, was this recent post proposing changes to the CONCORD system - check it out on the forums.
(as a slight aside, this is why I love EVE the most - the community wants realism as far as possible, and its amazing what people come up with to defend, enhance, or create that realism.
