Girly gamers

I’ve found, that as a girl, and a gamer, I’m a rare breed. Not as rare as I used to be, but still unusual enough to get some attention.

Gaming is one of those things that I’ve done for many years - first as a roleplayer and then, two years ago, I started playing online, on World of Warcraft. I found out, in a hurry, that most of the people I was playing with online were men, and teenagers. Its predomineantly, I believe, the domain of boys, because of the way we play games. Its not to say that women don’t get AS obsessed with games, but from personal experience, its a game, not my life - my partner on the other hand is an avid, deeply committed player of all things gaming - from DDO, to World of Warcraft - Eve, Dawn of War - you name it, he’s probably played it if its in those genres. And is still play Eve, despite buying it for ME at our anniversary. Its kinda funny, really.
In WOW, I found that being a girl was automatically a reason to assume I was looking for someone to jump into bed with - despite the fact that I usually introduced myself AS a girl only when Dave (Anatole) pointed out I was his other half.

I’ve found Eve to be slightly different - for a start, there does seem to be a higher number of women online - even since WOW has picked up in popularity with both genders - BUT Eve seems different.
I’m curious as to whether others are finding that as well - gender is unimportant because its not considered a ‘girls’ place, or a ‘boys’ place - just a good place to hang out.

There also seems to be a difference in gameplay - he’s obsessed with getting to where he’s going - and earning money. I just like bimbling around and hanging out. I CAN be agressive, and blow things up when I need to - but its not the be all and end all. That may be more personality than anything else, but it comes into line with what I’ve seen of my gameplay experiences and that of my partner and freinds.
I’m wondering if its typical though - so I thought I’d ask ;)
Is there a gameplay difference between genders? And does that carry over to other games?
