So You Want To Be A Researcher?

Research is one of the hardest professions to get into….

…unless you own a station with a laboratory in it, or you happen to have a mobile lab. The reason for this is that labs are always in high demand, in Empire space you will consider yourself extremely lucky to find and manage to get the use of a lab. So why is it so sought after? Well because a lab is the only way to research older, and get new, BPOs (Blue Print Originals) these are extremely valuable because not only can you make an unlimited supply of the item the BPO describes (as long as you have a factory and the materials) but you can also improve the BPO by conducting research on it and then make copies of the improved BPO to sell on the market as a BPC. BPCs can be pretty profitable, and are just about the only type that most players will sell, usually for between 1 million and 100 million isk per BPC. Oh and each BPC will only make a limited number of the items in question (which the owner of the BPO it came from gets to set).

So what skills do I need to be a researcher? Well you will need just about all of the science skills that relate to engineering, physics, biology, research and lab operation. You will also need a few skills not in the science tree (all at level 5, by the way) in the form of Engineering, Mechanics and Electronics. When you get into more advanced research you will often need skills like surveying, hacking, archaeology, electronic upgrades and the like just to get through.

So how are these skills used to come up with blueprints? Well to get blueprints you need to work with agents, (yup its the only career where agent work is mandatory to get new blueprints). The agent will allocate you missions that will require the science and general skills. As you complete these missions you will be allocated ‘research points’ these ‘points’ can be traded in at various levels to earn a blueprint (what blueprint you get is a bit of a lottery) but needless to say the more ‘points’ you invest, the better the blueprint you get. Thats about it for this career to be honest, its mission heavy (if you nwant to do it well), can be extremely profitable but takes a fair whack of capital to get started (cost of getting a lab) but once its running the materials usage is often minimal.

This LINK has some good additional information on R&D agents and how research points work.

And this POST on the Official EVE Online forums has some good info on Research agents too.
