Lasers, Hybrids and Projectiles
Whats the main difference? Well damage type aside there are some subtle differences, also each race specialises in specific weapons. Amarr uses lasers most, Minmatar, projectiles, whilst Gallente and Caldari use Hybrids. THough any race can use any weapon if trained in it. The size of weapon also matters (yes boys check your guns caliber….) Small turrets are frigates and larger classes and are best used on frigates and some cruisers. Medium turrets are used by cruisers and larger classes and are best used on Cruisers and above. Large turrets are used on Battleships and above and are really best suited to other Battleships. The Extra Large turrets can only be fitted on Dreadnaughts.
Anyway, firstly is Capacitor usage; Lasers use the most, then Hybrids then Projectiles (which actually use none). Range-wise, Lasers and Projectiles have the longest and Hybrids the shortest. It should be noted that in each class there is a long range weapon type with slow rate of fire and there is a short range weapon type with a fast rate of fire. The subtype by category is:
Laser
- Beam (Long range, slow RoF)
- Pulse (Short range, fast RoF)
Hybrid
- Railgun (Long range, slow RoF)
- Blaster (Short range, slow RoF)
Projectile
- Artillery (Long range, slow RoF)
- Autocannon (Short range, fast RoF)
Another main difference is the reload times, Lasers have the fastest reload times due to their limited damage and their huge capacitor drain, then its Hybrids again due to the limited damage type and minor capacitor drain and finally its Projectiles.
Projectiles also have the longest (by far falloff range) and this leads me nicely onto the subject of falloff ranges….
Your chance to hit is based on a percentage chance calculated by numerous factors, like your speed, the targets speed, the range to target, the size of the enemy ship, the caliber of your turret, the turret tracking speed, your perception and the opponent ships agility. Considering range and accuracy alone, we shall say, in the simplest terms, that upto the maximim optimal range you have 100% accuracy with your guns. At maximum optimal plus falloff you have 50% accuracy at maximum optimal plus 2*falloff you have 0% accuracy. You then bring in the other factors and as you can guess your chance to hit varies widely but at least you now have a basic idea of how that works and as I said before projectiles have the best falloff range!
Finally damage types;
Lasers can only fire EMP and Thermal damage,
Hybrids can only fire Thermal and Kinetic damage
and
Projectiles can fire a mixture of EMP, Thermal, Kinetic and Explosive.
Happy shooting!
