Ships - The Breakdown
I have on occasion been asked about the different classes of ships in EVE and what they are and how they compare, well listed below are the different ship classifications with some notes I have made about them.
Combat Ships Tree
Frigates -> Destroyers -> Cruisers -> Battlecruisers -> Battleships -> Carriers -> Dreadnaughts ->Motherships-> Titans
- Frigates - Smallest combat capable class vessel. Usually damned fast and provides the majority of the hull designs for many of the tech level 2 class ships. They fufil a variety of basic roles from mining/commerce to combat. The tech level 2 class frigates include: Covert Ops, Interceptors, Assault Frigates.
- Destroyers - The anti-frigate combat class vessel, provides the base hull for interdictor class tech 2 ships. Powerful against frigates at tech 1 but not a whole lot else.
- Cruisers - The basic mid-sized class of vessel. Like the firgate it fufills a variety of roles and provides some of the basic hull designs for some of the tech level 2 class ships that are a step above the tech level 2 frigates. The tech level 2 class cruisers include: Logistics, Heavy Assault Ships and Recon.
- Battlecruisers - A good mid-sized vessel between the cruiser and the battleship. These monstrosities are cheap in comparison to a battleship and give a surprising amount of flexibility to a player, they are also the base chassis for the Command Class tech level 2 ships.
- Battleships - The meat and potatoes of the fleet. These powerful workhorses will do almost any task needed, they are tough, flexible and capable. Currently there are no tech level 2 class Battleships.
- Carriers - These ships are the lowest level of capital class ships available. They host huge drone bays and are capable of creating their own jump gates to other systems and are able to transport smaller ships inside them for fleet actions.
- Dreadnaughts - These behemoths make up the backbone of the larger fleet actions, capable of enagaging huge numbers of ships from varying sizes or capable of taking out stations and POS’s these monstrosities should not be taken lightly.
- Motherships - The scaled up and in many ways tech level 2 version of the carrier, these ships are really in a class of their own. Often they are the enemy fleet with the amount of firepower they can bring with them.
- Titans - Well folks it currently doesn’t get any bigger than this….. These ship are the only ones in the game capable of mounting the often dreaded Doomsday weapons. These weapons are the only reason the titan class ship exists and are capable of devestating entire fleets in one shot.
Non-Combat ship trees
Shuttle
Industrial -> Transporter -> Freighter
Mining Barge -> Exhumer
- Shuttles - The smallest ship in the game, great from getting from A to B but not a whole lot else
- Industrials - The basic hauler class ship available. Can carry payloads of about 3500m3 to 7500m3.
- Transporters - These are the tech level 2 versions of the Industrials. THey can carry the same payloads but generally have some other ability that makes them just a little bit better.
- Freighters - When they say ‘…took everything including the kitchen sink…’ they were reffering to this class of vessel. Its a capital ship and has the ability to carry payloads of about 100,000m3. They can’t have any modules attatched and boy do they move slow but they sure do haul everything….
- Mining Barges - These are your basic ultimate mining machines, they are capable of mounting strip miners and can pull in thousands of m3 payloads of ore in minutes.
- Exhumers - Whilst Barges were the basic ultimate mining machines, these are the advanced version. When you need to clear out an entire belt, accept no substitutes.
