Combat with Unfriendlies part 1 - Taking the Pain (or NPC Damage types)

It has been known in EVE Online to find players and NPC factions that are…. a little less friendly than you would like. Often these ships will be found roaming the Jump Gates and Asteroid Belts, camping ouytside the Stations and generally making a nuisance of themselves to all and sundry.

Well I’m going to briefly talk about what sort of damage to expect from the NPC ships and also what the best types of damage to use against them is. All the information listed below has been researched by many different players and is available in a much more detailed form on numerous websites. I got my version of this from the Corporation and friends I play with and is as accurate as I can make it.

So….. the list below describes the factions and what damage types to expect from them… The main damage types are EM / Thermal / Kinetic and Explosive. Needless to say Explosive rips through armour usually pretty quickly and EM will tear thorugh most shields. Thermal and Kinetic are normally the all rounders that are about equally effective against shield and armour.

  • Guristas - NPC Pirates - Normally fly Caldari ships - Mostly deals Kinetic / Thermal Damage.
  • Serpentis - NPC Pirates - Mixed Ship Designs - Mostly deals Thermal / Kinetic Damage .
  • Blood Raider - NPC Pirates - Normally fly Amarran ships- Mostly Deals Thermal / EM damage.
  • Sansha’s Nation -NPC Pirates - Mixed ship designs - Mostly deals EM / Thermal damage.
  • Angel Cartel -NPC Pirates - Mixed ship designs - Mostly deals Kinetic / Explosive / Thermal damage.
  • Mordus -NPC Pirate/Mercenaries - Mixed ship designs - Mostly deals Kinetic / Thermal damage.
  • Mercenary -NPC Mercenary Groups - Mixed ship designs - All types damage can be dealt.

The following list below describes the sorts of damage you can expect from ships guarding Gates and Stations in 0.5 or greater security systems.

  • Minmatar Fleet - NPC Starting Faction Fleets - All damage types can be dealt.
  • Amarr Navy - NPC Starting Faction Fleets - Mostly deals EM / Thermal damage.
  • Gallente Navy - NPC Starting Faction Fleets - Mostly deals Thermal / Kinetic damage.
  • Caldari Fleet - NPC Staring Faction Fleets - Mostly deals Kinetic / Thermal damage.

Now you know what to expect to be fired at you when you engage these bullies, I should probably point you in the direction of what you should be defending yourself with by returning fire. For that please see part 2 of this post.
