If you want to get into cruisers quickly then you will want to experiment around with the characters setups and aim for getting your starting firgates skill to four. This will save you about two days of training and allow you to fly any type of type 1 frigate for your selected rate immediately.

Otherwise you’ll start out in a rookie scout frigate - which has poor capacitor, shields…everything.

Cruisers on the other hand, depending on your race will have better strengths, based on the race characteristics. You can also pick up cruisers specifically designed for mining - and will do just as well as some of the smaller mining barges. If you want to make your money from missions, cruisers are suitable right up to the 2-3 million skill points mark. From there you can upgrade to a battleship.
